At CCA our goal is to educate the public about the inhumane treatment at puppy mills and provide alternatives. With our team of dedicated volunteers, we aim to personally visit all breeders listed on our site to ensure they are humane breeders.
Once verified this will be indicated on this page. Verification includes an onsite visit to meet the breeders, and the dogs, and see what the home environment looks like. We verify that the moms and dads and puppies are well treated, and cared for like family.
Responsible breeders typically encourage visits as they have nothing to hide, and love their dogs and what they do.
Inhumane commercial breeders (AKA puppy mills) on the other hand will limit what you can see. While you might be allowed in a room to meet the puppies, they will not let you see where the dogs live. And, they typically won't let you meet the parents. This is because they know that once a potential customer sees the filth and horrid conditions in which the dogs are raised they will likely turn around and leave - and tell all their friends and family.
Distinguishing between a humane breeder and a puppy mill is easy once you are at the location where the dogs are bred.
Colorado Canine Advocates cannot verify the health status of the puppy parents nor guarantee the health of a new puppy you may purchase. We do recommend visiting Canine Health Information Center to educate yourself on the health conditions your specific breed might be at risk for and the questions to ask your breeder, including what steps the breeder has taken to mitigate the risks.
